Is it possible to get a flat tummy again after having 4 children?

Is it possible to get a flat tummy again after having 4 children (my youngest is 2)? I am 37, I have been doing lots of exercise over the last year, walking, swimming, body combat, ab exercises, some running (exercising most days). I weigh about 59 kgs and am 1.65 m tall. I would love to be able to wear a bikini confidently. (I was very lucky and never got any stretch marks during pregnancy). What else can I do?

Thank you for your email. It is great to hear that you are doing regular exercise, well done, especially more so that you are obviously a busy person with 4 children. The answer to your question is yes. From what you have told me it sounds as though you are probably doing too much of the aerobic activity, and not enough of the resistance exercise. Even though you are doing some abdominal work, which of course is important, you actually can not SPOT reduct. You have to include the whole body. This means doing quality exercise to get the results you want. You should try and include 1 to 2 days of resistance/weight training for all muscle groups into your schedule. You will find if you do this you will not have to do so much of the aerobic components. It is all about the right BALANCE. You can still do your abdominals every second day, as they recover a lot quicker than other muscle groups. It is also important to change your routine, resistance and aerobic activities every 4 to 8 weeks. Otherwise if you use the same you will stay the same. I would recommend for starters 1 to 2 x resistance program, and 1 to 2 other aerobic activities, for a min of 30 mins. You must also go out of your comfort zone, to make progress. I also think before commencing you must take your measurements,(waist, hips, chest, upper arm and upper leg) rather than your weight. Muscle weighs more than fat, but it takes up less space. Hence why your weight may stay the same, but your measurements will come down. You must be patient, focused and consistent, this will not happen overnight, but it WILL happen. You can either do this from a gym, or my new Band Fit DVD. As we age we lose lean muscle tissue and it is replaced with fat. The best exercise to preserve lean muscle is by resistance exercise. Hope this answers your question. Feel free to email me again if you are unsure about something. Keep up the good work. Eating quality foods is also vital.
